(Post written in 2020 but never updated…sorry!)
Let’s talk about the Tyra Tee. 🙂
If you watched my YouTube video on my sewing plans for November and December, you would know that I had lofty sewing plans. These plans included:
- Deer and Doe: Magnolia dress and Melilot Shirt
- Closet Core Patterns: Jenny Overalls, Cielo Top, and Carolyn Pajamas
- Helen’s Closet: Winslow Culottes
- Papercut Patterns: Nova Coat
- Nani Iro Sewing Studio: the Work Shirt/Dress
I’m partially here to report that the only thing I worked on (and ran into an issue with) was the Nani Iro Work Dress. Since then, I haven’t been been in the mood to sew. Fabric was cut all December, but nothing was done.
Thanks to random sewing hashtags on Instagram, I came across Just Patterns and their release of the Tatjana Trousers. The pants didn’t seem like they would be something I’m into, but I checked out their website and saw the Tyra Tee.
The Tyra Tee isn’t particularly groundbreaking, but, I can say that it is a beautiful shirt. What isn’t beautiful about a classic, simple t-shirt? Not only is it functional, but it also looks great. Coupled with the fact that it seemed simple to make, it looked like a winner in my book.
My Versions
I’ve made two versions so far and have plans for three more.
For the first version, I decided to use this green ponte knit. Unfortunately, I do not have a high quality photo of it but I did post it to my IG here. The most part that I found to be the most difficult was the neckline. The knit that I used for the shirt was very thick and that didn’t work out too well when it came to the neckline. I also didn’t have any ribbing to use as suggested.
For my second version I decided to get a little more adventurous and do a colourblock style. I still had trouble with the neckline and proper sizing because I did not use ribbing, however i think this version came out much better than my first.
Making the adjustment to do the colourblock wasn’t hard at all. It was simply a matter of adding in the seam allowance for the front to connect the pieces since I was no longer cutting on the fold.
Some Tips
This project was my first time working with knit fabric. If you have never worked with knits before, make sure you have the proper needles, such as ballpoint needles to do so. I don’t have an overlocker/serger, so I finished all of my seams with a zigzag stitch. Also, it really helped me to use a walking foot on my machine to keep things moving along smoothly.
Final Thoughts
This pattern is great because it can be made in a short amount of time AND it only needs about a yard of fabric. I think it would be great if you have scraps around that you need to get rid of. You could easily customize this shirt to make something totally unique.
I plan on making my other planned versions in between harder projects to keep my morale high.
10/10 would recommend if you’re looking for a good t-shirt pattern. It is perfect for a beginner and probably super easy for a veteran to accomplish. The pattern can be easily be modified to make something unique, but as is its a perfect closet staple!
Hopefully you found this interesting or it inspired you to make something of your own! If so, let me know in the comments!
