What I’m Sewing – Summer Edition

One of my greatest barriers to sewing is cutting fabric. I’m often cutting fabric on my floor if the fabric is very long or there’s a lot of pattern pieces and it can get uncomfortable if it takes a long time. However, trying to avoid cutting fabric means that I’m also avoiding sewing, and I don’t like that.

My general practice is to not cut a bunch of projects at one time, but this time around my dislike of cutting fabric has completely surpassed that practice. I decided to cut a bunch of projects so that I can’t use cutting fabric as an excuse to avoid my goal of sewing through my outrageous fabric stash.

Let’s take a look at the projects I’ll be working on:

*All photos were taken from the website of the pattern company except for the Tanita top photo, which is mine.

Saguaro Set

Friday Pattern Company describes this as a “two piece woven set made up of elastic waistband pants and a pullover top.” I made one of these because I was interested in the top but ended up being really interested in the pants. I made my first set out of linen noil and it is so comfortable. I decided I want a version in a print fabric and will be using what I think is a rayon poplin fabric for a bit of a swishy effect.

The Hazel Dress

Veronica Tucker describes this dress as “the ultimate flowy, comfortable, wearable piece that you can dress up or down.” I know sewing this is going to send me into a spiral with all of the gathers but I just know that it will be worth it. I really like flowy dresses and I feel like this is the kind of piece I would wear often. I’m using a burgundy lightweight linen for my version since I love linen. I think it would probably be nice in something with more drape like rayon or viscose, but I have linen so linen is what I will use.

Eleonora Dress and Emma Dress

Romantic dresses are kind of my guilty pleasure. I really love dresses that just seem soft, flowy, and feminine. They’re usually very comfortable and look very good on.

Silversaga describes the Eleonora dress as “romantic summer dress inspired by vintage chemise dresses, but with a modern take that makes it more suitable for everyday wear,” and the Emma dress as a “romantic sleeveless garment with feminine details, perfect for warm summer days.”

It was love at first sight for me and I’m very excited for these dresses. I don’t often use ditzy prints, or light colors such as white or cream, so this will give me an excuse to do so or to use something else. The plan is to make these out of lightweight cotton. I’m nervous about having to work with the elastic, but I think I can tackle it just fine.

Hallon Dress

The Paradise Patterns is described as “a happy, swingy dress with a very relaxed fit, and a lovely ruffled hem.” This is something that has been on my list for a while. I initially felt it would be a great dress to wear on hot days or as a cover up. I did cut one of these in a cotton fabric, but I also have one of these that is a work in progress that I pulled out of the abyss to finish as well.

Ogden Cami

The True Bias Ogden Cami is described as “simple blouse that can either be worn on its own or as a layering piece under blazers and cardigans.” This is another WIP that I pulled out of the abyss. It seems I started one of these in a navy rayon challis at some point in time, so I believe I should finish it. I can always use a tank, so this would fit into my wardrobe well once finished.

Malibu Shirt

Staystitch Pattern Co describes this pattern as a “cropped collared shirt with a faux twist detail, a patch or flat pockets, back yoke, and faux cuffs.” This is meant to be an oversized shirt and I think this is the kind of pattern that would create a great layering piece, which I’m always keen on. I might want a version in cotton, but my first version will be a white linen. Very classic.

Nani Iro Antique Skirt & Short Sleeve Gathered Shirt

These two patterns are from the book A Year of Sewing with Nani Iro by Naomi Ito. I’m sewing both of these using Nani Iro fabric which is a white cotton/silk. My goal with this is to have a set that works well together but where the pieces can also function separately.

Tanita Top

I’ve previously made this pattern and reviewed it here. I wear this top all the time so to me it makes sense to make another one. I have lengthened my next version by another 2 inches…so a total of 3 inches total. Very excited for this as I often wear this top to work and I love how it looks with skirts so this should fit into my wardrobe well.

La Blouse

OKAY, SLEEVES!

Atelier Brunette describes this shirt as “a blouse with a strong character that plays with gathers and volume. It has a romantic style with a touch of modernity!” and I LOVE it. The sleeves are speaking to me. I want to make this out of the Atelier Brunette Fuji Night fabric, however I’m making a wearable toile out of linen noil I bought at Joanns. The pattern calls for fabric with drape, which will really make those sleeves look their best. I’m very, very, very excited about this pattern.

Orchidee

Described by Deer and Doe as “Romantic and soft, Orchidée is a princess-style dress and blouse with beautiful details,” this is another pattern that I’ve had collecting dust but decided now was a good time to make. I have fabric for a dress version, however I’m making the top as my wearable toile to make sure the fit is okay before I cut into the dress fabric. I’m predicting this will be another romantic win.

Lea Bias Dress

Soften Studio describes this as “a loose fitting pullover dress with a scoop neckline.” This is another one of those wardrobe basics that I think will carry me through the seasons/years. The website also says it’s meant to be layered, which I love. I love layering. Not much more to say about this one except I expect it to be a staple piece.

Wrap up

What a long list! I don’t particularly have an order in which I want to work on these, though I will be working on light colored items first before other colors simply because I don’t want to change the thread on my serger multiple times unless I have to. I will be reviewing and showing my projects as I complete them and while I would love to finish these before the end of September, as usual, I’m not rushing. Half the enjoyment is in the process, right?

Anyway, thanks for sticking with me this far. Have you made any of these patterns? Are you interested in any of these patterns? Do you like cutting fabric?
